ATRI releases sleep apnea research data

The American Transportation Research Institute released the results of its sleep apnea survey, which highlights a number of issues related to truck driver screening and treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). With data from over 800 commercial drivers, ATRI's report is the first to quantify the costs and other impacts that truck drivers are experiencing as they address diagnosis and potential treatment regimen for OSA.

Telemedicine approved for Arkansas

Under proposed regulations approved by the Arkansas State Medical Board, doctors would be allowed to use video and audio technology to remotely treat patients they have never examined in person.

The regulations would allow doctors to establish "a proper physician/patient relationship" through an examination using "real time audio and visual telemedicine technology" as long as the technology "provides information at least equal to such information as would have been obtained by an in-person examination."

ATA announces $950,000 dividend from workers' compensation fund

The Arkansas Trucking Association Self-Insurers' Fund has declared a $950,000 dividend to its 47 trucking companies enrolled in the workers' compensation insurance trust, bringing the total amount distributed from the fund to over $23.4 million since its creation in 1993, and over $8.7 million paid since 2010.

ATA Board of Directors elects new members for 2016

The Arkansas Trucking Association held elections for three new members for the Board of the Directors at its annual conference in Little Rock, Ark. May 18 - 20.

New board of directors members include Martin Tewari, USA Truck; Jeff Loggins, Loggins Logistics, Inc.; and Carl Boja, TravelCenters of America.

Tewari, president of trucking at USA Truck, replaced Tom Glaser, USA Truck’s former president at USA Truck, in one of the at-large seats on the Board.

ATA launches new council for finance professionals

The Arkansas Trucking Association formed the Accounting & Finance Council for accounting and finance professionals at its annual meeting in Little Rock, May 18 -20.

The ATA-AFC will promote cooperative efforts among member companies of the ATA to increase education and research of taxation, finance, accounting, collection, risk management and technology issues impacting the trucking industry.

The electric truck is (almost) here

Nikola Motor Company — called the “Tesla of the Trucking Industry” for its electric vehicles and the first name of famous inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla— announced 7,000 reservations for its yet-to-be-released electric hybrid “Nikola One” semi-truck. If all of the orders are filled, Nikola can claim $2.3 billion in revenue since the model was announced in May 2016.

Arkansas Supreme Court rules in favor of ATA

In an opinion handed down April 14, the Arkansas Supreme Court agreed with the Arkansas Trucking Association in a 4-3 vote that struck down an Arkansas statute, prohibiting information about seat belt use in civil lawsuits over vehicle crashes.

RI truckers move national conference due to tolling plan

A national trucking conference planned for 2018 was relocated in response to the RhodeWorks truck toll plan.

"We basically in essence had a deal in place, and unfortunately right about that time with the passage of RhodeWorks, my peers approached and felt the climate wasn't quite right to start bringing people from around the nation to Rhode Island," said Chris Maxwell from the Rhode Island Trucking Association.

Arkansan receives TMC's Silver Spark Plug

Curtis Cummings, advisor for maintenance support at FedEx Freight in Harrison, Ark. received the American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council’s highest honor — the Silver Spark Plug —at the 2016 TMC Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition on March 1.

Patrick Reed, an executive vice president and chief operating officer of FedEx Freight in North America since 2004, is retiring, at the end of July.

U.S. Army to test autonomous driving

The U.S. Army plans a highway test this summer of driverless convoy technology to examine how the vehicles communicate with one another, with nonmilitary vehicles and with the roadway infrastructure through radio links.
