Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and financial crisis, American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council announced the cancellation of its 2020 national technician championships, SuperTech and FutureTech, which were scheduled to be held this fall.
The annual competitions for trailer and truck technicians as well as technician students are normally held in conjunction with TMC’s fall meeting. The meeting for shop supervisors, maintenance executives, and engineering professionals will now be completely virtual this year on the originally scheduled dates, Sept. 14-17.
TMC Executive Director Robert Braswell said the decision was not made lightly.
“The real issue that our members told us is that everybody is really anticipating [being] — or is right now — extremely busy making up for ground that they lost in the beginning of the year in terms of their businesses,” Braswell said. “The time and the ability and the budgets for people to actually travel to an in-person event have been compromised by COVID, even if COVID isn’t the main reason.”
In lieu of the competition events, TMC will plan the very first National Technician Appreciation Week for Sept. 21-25, training webinars will be held for professional technicians in the industry.
