Keeping drivers safe on the road amidst protests across the nation

Safety is always the top priority at the ATA. The ongoing protests across our nation have unfortunately led to violence and looting in some areas raising concern for the safety of professional drivers. As these events continue to transpire, it is important for drivers to heighten their situational awareness as they travel. Some suggestions for our industry to maintain safe and secure operations include the following:

  • Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections before departing domiciled locations; eliminate maintenance breakdowns from the equation.
  • Listen to local news reports for late breaking developments that could affect your trip.
  • Plan your route to avoid cities where riots and protests are occurring if possible.
  • If traveling in certain cities that cannot be avoided, call local law enforcement beforehand and let them know the pickup/delivery address to see if they can provide a safe route or any other assistance.
  • Check-in with dispatchers to learn of any new traffic disruptions.
  • What a driver is seeing may be different than what a dispatcher is seeing on a screen. Communication is key!
  • If you come across a protest or violent situation, keep your doors locked and windows rolled up.
  • Be cautious around bridges and overpasses as protestors have been known to throw debris at traffic below.
  • Plan ahead to park in safe and secure locations.
  • If possible, try parking before it gets dark and park in well-lit and populated rest/truck stops.
  • Keep your company posted and updated as you travel. Carriers should know where your drivers are at all times.
  • Follow law enforcement direction.
  • If available, utilize your in-cab camera in an unsafe situation to document your surroundings.
  • Do not compromise your safety.
